A/An
The Article ‘a’ is used before countable nouns beginning with consonant sounds. (b, c, d, f, g, I and etc.)

Example
A boy
A cat
A dog
A fish
A girl

The Article ‘an’ is used before countable nouns beginning with vowel sounds. (a, e, i, o, u.)

Example
An apple
An elephant
An ice cube
An orange
An umbrella

(* Countable nouns are nouns that can be counted. For example- you can count trees, animals and people)

When do you use a/ an?
1)      Refers to a general, countable item (one item)
“Please pass me a plate, please get me a drink, I bought a shirt.”
2)      However, we use a/ an in expressions referring to more than one thing
A few, A number of, A great deal of, A great amount, A little, A lot, A small amount of
