Comparative and Superlative

Comparative and Superlative

One-syllable adjectives.

If the adjective is a one word adjective, add -er for the comparative form and  -est for the superlative form.

adjective        comparative            superlative
tall                     taller                        tallest

For example:
1) Azzam is tall
2) Athirah is taller than Azzam
3) However, Mahirah is the tallest of all.

If the one word adjective ends with an -e, add -r for the comparative form and -est for the superlative form.

adjective           comparative            superlative
wise                     wiser                       wisest.

For example:
1) Adlin is wise
2) but, Aina is wiser than Adlin
3) Shasha is the wisest of all.

Two-syllable adjectives.

With most two-syllable adjectives, you add the comparative with more and the superlative with most.

For example:
adjective                   comparative               superlative
peaceful                    more peaceful           most peaceful
tired                          more tired                 most tired

However, not all two-syllable adjectives uses comparative -more and superlative with -
most

  • If the two-syllable adjectives ends with a –y, change the y to and add –er for the comparative form. For the superlative form change the y to i and add –est

For example:

adjective           comparative                    superlative
happy                  happier                         happiest
hungry                 hungrier                        hungriest
